Portuguese Artist Sparks Dialogue with Architecture

Fernanda Fragateiro

Portuguese sculptor Fernanda Fragateiro displays her first solo exhibition in Switzerland, at the Gallery Studio Sandra Recio in Geneva.

The artist brings together a number of pieces that refer to architecture in a minimalist approach using colours, textures and shapes. Entitled “Landscape Non Landscape”, the exhibition was inspired by the architecture of Gallery Studio Sandra Recio’s building.

“This exhibition is born from the building where it operates the gallery (…) and the architectural element of the blind (…) that is common in Geneva,” she says.

Fragateiro says that the art pieces symbolise some of the materials and colours visible on the façade of the building. The exhibits were made from brass, books, silk lines and nails. “I work with all materials (…) but also with books, magazines and prints”, she underlines. The main work, also entitled “Landscape Landscape There”, refers to the typical green of the shutters of most Geneva buildings.

Architecture admirer, Fragateiro still refers to the Swiss architect Le Corbusier conducted through a map built of wires and nails, realised directly in the gallery. The work of this international artist is currently shown in Lisbon and Bilbao.  Next year, the sculptor will exhibit his work in Berlin and Évora. Fernanda Fragateiro works and lives in Lisbon.

She has participated in several public and private exhibitions in Colombia, Spain, United States, France, Switzerland and Portugal. The Studio Gallery Sandra Recio discloses particularly Hispanics contemporary artists and Latin America, but also supports some Swiss and European artists. “Landscape Non Landscape” is visible until the 31st of October at the Studio Gallery Sandra, Geneva.
